Professor's Greeting

I am Akira Nishiyama, and have been in charge of the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, Kagawa University since 2007. I would like to take the opportunity to offer my greetings to all of you once again as the Japanese era name has changed to ‘Reiwa’ (beautiful harmony) in 2020.

When I took over the professorship, I was the first graduate of Kagawa University, Faculty of Medicine (formerly Kagawa Medical University) to become a professor of the school of Medicine. During the last 13 years, the social situation has changed drastically, and I have come to feel that the research environment is deteriorating. We continue to face a very difficult situation due to a reduction in the number of personnel following the incorporation of national universities, diversification of university operations, and a drastic reduction in the number of researchers due to the revision of the clinical resident/pharmacist systems.

However, even under such difficult circumstances, we have been able to conduct a certain level of research with the available research funding. My deepest thanks to our staffs for their efforts and collaborators for their support. In particular, the warm encouragement what I have received from many senior and junior researchers, colleagues, and collaborators is precious. I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude.

On the other hand, I am convinced that, given the challenging research environment in the future, it will be necessary for all members of the department to make their efforts redouble in order to survive. As a chairman of this department, I am strongminded to face the challenges of the rapidly changing circumstances, sometimes in a way that may seem ruthless and sometimes in a way that may seem reckless. What kind of contribution can we make to the society? And what should we do for that? We would like to do our best to manage department while always asking ourselves, "What is the best way to learn?

Information disclosure on this website is also considered as one of the important activities, and we will make every effort to update the research activities, educational activities, and social contribution activities of our department from time to time. We would be most delighted if you could support our activities and spread the circle of activities even a little. Although it is a small department, we will continue to strive to make even greater contributions to the society, and we look forward to your continued guidance and support.
